The Third Space: A Conversation Between Text and Imagery
Student Photography and Writing from Providence, RI and Inhumas, Brazil

During the summer of 2005, students in the Brown Summer High School classroom of ArtsLit Director Kurt Wootton and Brazilian teacher Daniel Soares studied Walt Whitman's Song of Myself. They took self-portraits and wrote about their photographs as part of their summer experience. In October of 2005, ArtsLit Project Coordinator Jori Ketten worked with students at Daniel's English-language school, OLY, in the town of Inhumas, Brazil. The students had previously studied a variety of texts with teacher Michele Siquiera; with Jori, they took photographs relating to the themes of these texts and wrote about their images.

Brown Summer High School, Providence, RI

This picture is of a girl who wishes she could stop being scared of the outcome and enjoy the experience. She wishes she could seize the day without second guessing herself and without doubting her abilities. Se wishes she could go wholeheartedly into something without dreading failure.

- Kandice Barreda

This photo is about my childhood. When I was a little girl I was always hiding in dark places. I just wanted to escape the world and the problems that I might have had at the time. I still do it, every time I want to cry or just be alone where no one could bother me I just go to a dark place.

- Rebecca M. Perea

I knew a girl whose name is Nicky
With eyes as worn as her jeans
Whose laughter could light any mood.
I knew a girl whose name was Nicky
With a smile that revealed Jimmy Dean’s
Who had an optimistic mind set, but a pessimistic attitude.
I knew a girl whose name was Nicky
Whose skin tells her story,
One filled with spite, anger, hatred and self loathing.
I knew a girl whose name was Nicky
Who carried on through it all.

This photo represents the hard moments of my life. When I see this picture I think about bad things that happened to me. This photo makes me feel sad. I took this photo because it caught my attention.

- Ronnie Vasquez Rivas

This photo represents a ladder of life. In the photo I am reaching for a step forward in life. It represents how I am reaching for an unknown goal in life.

- Byron Estrada

This photo represents how I survived in my world. When my mother and I moved here it was tough; hardly any food, no furniture, shelters, asking friends for favors, being home alone since I was three, noticed when I was six. My life was pretty hard and that’s the reason I picked this photo. The angles and the way my body is represents how my life went: left, right, down, up, upside down, and right-side up but it was most of the time going down. The reason why I’m holding myself up while I am upside down is because even though my world was going wrong and bad I was still strong to hold myself up. That’s why I have a smile while I was upside down just in case you were thinking, “why is he smiling?” That’s my story, what’s yours?

- Josh Vega

When I was small my parents would argue. I wouldn’t show it, but I would be in my own little corner, curled up in a little ball while I hear the startling blows my father would give my mom. I remember one story my mom told me when I was small, my father took out a revolver on her. The good thing is that it had no bullets. Thank God it didn’t.

- Christian Mejia

This picture is about a girl who isn’t 100% there. As you can see in the picture there is a wall blocking some of me. In reality, it’s an inner wall, maybe even an emotional damn that only let’s half of what I feel come out.

BETTER EDUCATION

Money can open doors to better schools, better universities. It can prepare the people for a future where they make something better. I took the picture because it is a private school and a good school, but I didn’t study in a private school. I have hope that my daughter will have a better future.

- Liliane Lúcia

UNION

I took this picture because the picture represents strong relationships, hope and strength. In the text there are two people connected (woman and man). This picture is connected to my life because when I was a child my grandfather was sick with cancer in his head and before he died I stayed with him until his death, I helped him, I had hope and I had a strong relationship with him.

- Igor

CAN MONEY OPEN EVERY DOOR?

When I took the picture I feel that money can’t open every door, because money can’t open the doors of health. When one person has a lot of money and is sick, she goes to the hospital. When people see one person doesn’t have a lot of money in front of the hospital she tries to buy her place, but people don’t like it.

- Sarah Evelyn Alves Fernandes

MONEY DOESN’T OPEN EVERY DOOR

I took this picture because in here the money can’t buy life, health. Money can help a little bit. If money buys health many people won’t die and won’t be suffering from bad illness that are bad and sad.

- Camilla

FRIENDSHIP

I took his picture to show how important it is to have people in my life that I can trust. Natália is a person that I can trust and her friendship helps me very much. In my life she helps me to overcome many obstacles, gives me strength to continue with my problems. This is my best friend. She studies with me, she goes to my house every day. At school we sit together and I listen to her problems, for example when she fought with her boyfriend.

- Eurides Cristina

MY FATHER, MY LIFE...

My father and I, we are great friends. Everything that my father can do for me, he does. When I was a child everything that my father said to me to do, I did. Today sometimes, my father and I argue, I don’t do everything that he wants me to do, but my father knows that I love him very much ... and I know that he loves me, too.

- Izabela de Morais Araújo

LOVE

Two hands, two loves, one heart. Two people meeting to build just one way, just one life. I am thinking that love can build things and that without love, everything is empty and dark like a night without moon and stars, dry like a desert place. So, this picture shows the love represented by two parts from the same whole full of hope, faith, all that we have in our lives.

- Jaqueline Cunha

THE CAPITALIST WORLD

I took this picture, because many people think that money is not necessary, but money is everywhere in your life. Today the world is very capitalist and you will use money for all that you will buy. Health is very important, but if you don’t have money and if you are sick, you can’t use the private hospital where there are good physicians
Two houses, one very big and the other is small and poor. The people that live in the big house have a life that is very good, because they have money. In the small house the people live well, have a good life, but they have to worry if tomorrow they will have money or will not have money. For me, money is very important because I need money for everything I do. I wish that everyone could have a lot of money, thus nobody would have needs.

- Paulo Marcos Borges Filho

THE LOVE IS BUILT

I took this picture because it illustrates a normal routine, but with simple actions that complete it: giving someone small flowers, no matter what time, or stopping a moment and looking deep in his eyes and to know what he needs or what he is feeling. So, this picture illustrates the theme of “Loving Donna”, because with simple actions Donna’s husband showed his love, in the happy moments and in the sad moments, he knew how to say “I love you” even though Donna stayed in the hospital. In my life love is the feeling that is the most important, but it is not easy to give and to receive true love. For this reason I believe that love is built day after day, with simple actions that show this feeling and so I try to do many things to make my daily routine full of love.

- Ranyella Siqueira

FAITH

I am an example for people because I have faith in my life and overcome obstacles and I influence people to go to church. If people have persistence for solving their problems they will feel better because the problems will go away.

- Natália Ribeiro Pacheco

LOOKS ARE DECEIVING

I took this picture because the most beautiful person outside can be the worst person inside and the ugliest person can be the best person inside. In my life I know a person who is ugly outside but she is completely different inside, she is my companion, she is friendly and happy. I know this person since I was a child, I like to see her. She has strength and it is funny to talk with her.

- Matheus Ricardo

A SAD WOMAN

I took this picture, because the sadness of this woman caught my attention. I learned that we have to fight until the end, because the woman in the picture has all reasons to give up. But every day she goes in front of the bank and waits for somebody to help her, because she doesn’t agree with the way her life is. Despite the sadness, she has hope that one day she will be happy and she never gets tired of fighting. I learned too, that we have just complained and we forgot that we have people that suffer much more than we do.

- Bruna Raquel

MY COUNTRY

When I took this picture. I thought about my country and its people. This country is my Brazil. It’s not only my country but also other’s country that are in a similar position, such as Latin America. Thus I try to imagine what the Brazilian people experience when they stay in another country; principally Europe and the USA. This person tries to get a good life in another country; but many people in this country have a lot of prejudice. This is one thing that Brazilian people experience. I never went to another country; this I know because I read newspaper and I know people that stayed in these countries and suffered from it. But me, I stay in my country and one day I received an e-mail and this e-mail had news about Mc Donald’s, a big American industry. It said that on their napkins it says “Save Amazônia, kill one Brazilian”. It’s a big prejudice. Mc Donald’s has a lot of power in the world so when one person that doesn’t know Brazil see it, he will think this is a horrible country. I felt sad about it but I hope one day the world doesn’t have prejudice about nationality or ethnic or religion.

- Fernanda de Freitas Bueno

THREE IMPORTANT THINGS

I took this picture because I wanted to show one of the themes of the story “Loving Donna”. This is an abstract picture because it shows a clock that according to the text, represents the time. Time is connected with many things like: hope, love and strong relationships. Hope, because when we have this, we believe in life and go ahead with every objective and maybe we get what we want. Love, because it is a feeling that we build with time, we are not born with it. Strong relationships, because when we have a difficult life we become closer with other people and, love and hope increase.
And with hope, love and strong relationships our troubles pass faster. Everything here is connected to my life, because the time shows that everything has solutions and nothing is impossible if you just believe, and time will help you accomplish what you want.

- Gabriela de Lima Santiago

FAMILY LOVE

Everyone knows that family love is the true love, a love that overcomes everything in everytime. It is the true love that allows you to forgive everything. For example, if you did a bad thing to your mother and she forgave you, it’s this that I tried to show in this picture. If you look carefully you will see one hand, this hand can be Jesus’ hand or your father’s hand. It isn’t necessary to be sad about one fight, God forgives everything. His mercy is forever.

- Thiago Henrique de Deus e Silva

LOVE BETWEEN FRIENDS

I took this picture because life is made of small moments. In my life I think love between friends have to be forever. Pictures are like life’s scenery and this scenery must be love, hope, friendship and beauty of the nature.

- Andréa Alves

FRIENDSHIP

I took this picture because I think that friendship is so important for people and because we must have people to trust in the world, we must have somebody to help us, to stay with us when we’re afraid. And our best friend is our mother because she stays with us when we need the most help. In my life, my best friend helps me so much and so do I. For me she has my heart and I can’t live without her.

- Priscila Calil

THE LONELY OLD WOMAN

I took this picture because in my opinion, this life time is very important. This old woman lives in the asylum Meu Lar, I think this act is inhuman, because her sons don’t take care of her. She lives alone, she is very sick, she doesn’t speak and she doesn’t walk anymore.
Her sons don’t visit her in the asylum. I feel very sad, at that moment I got ashamed because many people do it with their mothers too.

- Maria Aliete

BE HAPPY ANYTIME!

I took this picture because I see in their faces the most pure happiness. The day or the hour doesn’t matter. Her sons are having ice-cream and getting out the square, seeing people. This time is important: parents are with their sons, having fun and speaking too, knowing what they think and what they can do or can’t do. It’s very important, it can be Monday, Sunday ... anytime, we can do this anytime. In my adolescence I remember that in the square I passed many times with my family, my friends and I had fun a lot.

- Cláudia Maria Miranda

HOUSE WORK

I took this picture because I think in this place the owner lives with the most prejudice and injustice that exists in the world. He lives in this situation where he has his house and his work in the same place, and his work doesn’t give him money or satisfaction. He doesn’t have money to build a good house. Everybody thinks he is a bad person, dishonest and impolite and doesn’t have enough education to participate in society, and because of these facts he is excluded from society. In my life I try not to think this way, because nowadays, the world doesn’t permit us to give advice to others in need, but I can’t lie here, I try to avoid people who live in bad situations because it is difficult for me to believe in them.

- Marco Túlio Ramos Serrano

A BEGGAR

This woman asked us for something, because she is a beggar. Everyday she goes to the door of Bradesco to ask for tips. She is a sad woman, she is a poor woman. She was very happy in this picture, because one woman started to talk with her. I took this picture because it shows the reality of the most part of the Brazilians. She is alone in the world. She doesn’t have anybody in the world. She doesn’t receive care! She suffered and suffers today too. I learned with this picture that we have to thank God for everything that we have.

- Hadassa Leal

STRENGTH

Donna was very strong when she discovered her sickness and she continued to look forward, without feeling down. And another person that was very strong in this story was her husband, he always carried about her, stayed with her through difficult times and bad moments. In the end both of them overcame all the difficult and their love was stronger than before. I feel we need to be very strong to overcome the obstacles of our lives, because many times we trip and sometimes we feel down and need strength to continue our way.

- Kênia Aloane

EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN

I took the picture because I think the picture represents injustice. The child could play, study, but he is working to help his family. I think his family has difficulty in having money, but he wasn’t sad, he is proud of his work. In my life I try to value things that my parents give me. I don’t agree with the exploitation of children and I think that it has to finish. Children have to study, play, even if they have difficulties in their lives.

- Caroline

A YOUNG WORKER

I took this picture because it represents the true situation of many children in Brazil, not just in Brazil but in the world. Many children have to work to help their parents, to eat, to live and for this, they don’t have time to study, so that in the future they could have better conditions of life for their parents, for us and for their sons and daughters.

- Jéssica Cristina

BRAZILIAN SOUL

I think this photo is like a flag of overcoming and it represents the love of this man for his life, because even walking in a wheel chair he works. I think he has a family too and he works hard to give the best that himself can give to his family because he loves his family. If I could give a title to this photo I would give a title like “Brazilian Soul”, because to be Brazilian is never giving up.

- Hélio Baragatti

SADNESS

This picture shows two old women, abandoned by their families because their families don’t have patience with these people that need to be taken care of. I think that these people are not happy, because they stay far from their families, although even though they are far, they are beloved by others. My family always taught me to love the people.

- Mayara Yanna

SOCIAL INEQUALITY

I took this picture because there are a few people with a lot of money and there are other people with very little money. I selected this picture because it reveals the social inequality that exists in our world. This house is my neighbors house, this house is beautiful big and perfect. I would like to have a house like this one. My house is very good, but not like this.

- Frederico

THE GREATEST LOVE

I took this picture because in my opinion the mother’s love is the greatest one. A mother supports many things to her children. If her child will be bad or it will have problems, she will love it for the rest of her life, her love is unconditional. I observe this mother and I saw that she loves so much her daughter because she took care of her. In my life my mother’s love makes me try to be a good person. And I know that she does anything for me and my brothers, it doesn’t matter if it’s hard or easy. The mother’s love overcomes obstacles.

- Suzze Graciella das Chagas

IS MONEY THE DOOR TO A BETTER LIFE?

I took this picture because if the person in the picture had money, she wouldn’t need to beg. She is hungry. She would have a better life, but she has problems in her leg. If the problems don’t have a solution, then the money can’t open the door for healing her leg. Money open many doors but not every doors.

- Antônio Lucas

THE TRUE VALUE?

I took the picture because the man asked me to take it. At that moment I thought this man felt he was a victim of prejudice. I think he was thinking, “God, nobody wants to photograph me,” and in that moment my heart hurt, and it caught my attention, so he approached the car, and with a sad face I took the picture. The men became happy, but I thought a lot about that moment because the car was not his car and I think he was thinking “I want this car, but I will never have one like this”, I could see the value that people give to life as you are what you have or how much money you have. I think that the true meaning of the life it is not what you have, but what you are. I felt sad when I took this picture because that man transmitted through his eyes what he was feeling, how sad he was because he doesn’t have a car like that.

- Vinícius Pessoni

SADNESS

I chose this woman to photograph because in this picture she shows the sadness and the problems that many families have. When I saw this old woman she caught my attention so I could show people whose families abandoned them. I think that they don’t have money or patience with her because she has problems. And when I look at the face of these people I see sad people that suffer because her family didn’t worry with her and the first thing they do is to abandon her. I am sad because those people don’t have happiness, they don’t see their families. The only thing that makes me happy is that those people have been very well cared for. In my life I never put my parents in this kind of house I think they both do the possible and impossible things for me, for I study in a good school, have a good life and never miss food. My parents didn’t do everything for me to be left behind by me in the end of their lives. I think that when a person has a problem, it is in this moment that we have to help them. Even when you don’t have money to take care of them it is the time to do the impossible. Because the people that do many things for you are the one you will help.

Beautiful hotel in Kiev and apartments.
